REPOTTING CITRUS FRUIT: HOW AND WHEN TO DO IT

Citrus fruits are very common plants in Italy, especially in the southern regions which boast a more suitable climate for their cultivation. Despite this, it is possible to find lemon or orange trees even in the north, usually grown in pots to better protect them during the winter.

Lemons, oranges, tangerines, kumquats and citrons are all citrus species suitable for growing in pots. These evergreen plants are very beautiful from an aesthetic point of view and can be kept in contained dimensions thanks to the cultivation in pots, which allows them to be moved to sheltered areas when it is too cold.

In order for the plant to grow healthy and strong, it is necessary to periodically transfer it to a larger pot than the previous one. In this way, the necessary space for the roots is guaranteed and you have the opportunity to renew the soil and fertilize the plant correctly, providing it with all the nutrients necessary to continue to grow and bear fruit.

The choice of soil is very important. When you switch to a larger pot, you need to use more soil, enriched with nutrients. The ideal substrate for citrus fruits must be suitable for acidophilic plants, draining and contain an average amount of organic matter.

There are specific soils on the market for citrus fruits, but it is also possible to prepare the substrate independently, by mixing river sand, garden soil and peat. Using real soil from the field can help bring microorganisms into the pot. However, since peat is not very sustainable, it is preferable to use a substrate made from coconut fibers as an alternative.

The repotting of citrus fruits is a fundamental operation to ensure correct growth and fruiting of the plant. By using the right soil and following the right cultivation techniques, you can ensure a long and healthy life for citrus plants grown in pots.
