AIR PRUNING POTS – SUPER ROOTS

With the super roots air pruning pots of the Roothus line, transpiration is more effective and implies a healthier substrate which leads to more homogeneous germination on each shelf. The tap root of the recently sprouted plant is pruned at the base, encouraging branching of the lateral roots.

Better oxygenation also means that healthy microbes produce more nutrients, which the plant’s healthy root system can take up immediately, promoting faster growth. In a standard seed or cutting tray, the growing tap root wriggles as it reaches the base of the container. At the same time, a lack of oxygen in the substrate means fewer healthy microbes to produce food for the plant.

Let’s take two thirty-day-old olive trees. One comes from a Roothus container, the other is grown in a conventional container. Roothus grown in super roots anti-spiraling pot has already undergone air pruning of its tap root and is growing with healthy lateral roots.

The tap root of the other struck the bottom of the pot and deformed into a J shape. Six months after sprouting, the Roothusgrown olive tree developed a mass of healthy, fibrous roots, while those of the other olive trees grown in a standard container are helically deformed.

When washed, the diversity between the roots is very evident. The upper root system of the tree grown in Roothus has already produced more growth. The tree grown in air pruning pots Roothus has a 20% greater circumference and is 10% taller. The top growth is denser and there are fewer spaces between internodes. The extremely healthy root system of plants propagated in Roothus allows for rapid transplanting into much larger containers. For example, tree seedlings happily transition from the 0.5 or 1 liter propagation pot to 9 liter containers, and then to larger containers such as the 50 liter container.

One year after sprouting, the olive tree grown in Roothus super roots anti-spiralization pot was placed in a 25 liter Roothus container. After another nine months, we washed the roots again. The tree has had good growth and now has a dense mass of healthy, fibrous roots.
