THE CHOICE OF THE SOIL FOR THE AROMATICS

Preparing potting soil for potted plants can be a task that requires some attention and care. Before repotting, in fact, it is necessary to prepare the new container, but above all the substrate that will host the plants. This must be chosen according to the species to be transplanted, in order to guarantee the best possible growth.

Aromatic and medicinal plants, for example, require a particular soil, characterized by a loose and draining consistency. However, it doesn’t need to be particularly rich in nutrients: on the contrary, they are humble plants that are satisfied with few things. This is why it is advisable to choose a specific soil for aromatic herbs or to dilute the universal one with country earth and a little sand.

It is also important to fertilize the substrate, even if aromatic plants are not particularly “gluttonous” in terms of nutrients. The presence of organic matter, in fact, is essential to improve the characteristics of the soil and to nourish the plant during its growth. It should be remembered that aromatics benefit from a variety of elements, present in moderation.

Nitrogen, for example, is one of the basic elements of fertilizers, but it must never be in excess. If this were to happen, in fact, it could stimulate the production of leaves to the detriment of their quality. In this case, the result would be luxuriant but not very robust and above all not very fragrant aromatic herbs, with a lower concentration of essential oils.

For this reason, it is advisable to use good mature compost, limiting the use of peat (both for ecological reasons and in order not to acidify the soil too much) and poultry manure (which, although rich in nitrogen, could be too concentrated).
